About Us

Welcome to Little Apiary on the Prairie, a family-owned and locally-rooted apiary  nestled in the heart of the Midwest. Our passion for bees and the vital role they play in our ecosystem has driven us to create a haven for these industrious insects, ensuring that they thrive in an environment that promotes health, productivity, and harmony with nature.

Our Roots

Little Apiary on the Prairie traces its roots back to a humble beginning, where a love for nature and a fascination with the intricate world of bees led to the establishment of our small, yet thriving, apiary. Situated in the picturesque landscapes of Minnesota, our family business has flourished over the years, evolving into a beacon of sustainability and responsible beekeeping practices.

A Collaborative Spirit

Our commitment to excellence extends beyond our local boundaries. We have forged a meaningful partnership with a prominent apiary with locations in California and North Dakota. This collaboration allows us to procure high-quality bees for sale to fellow beekeepers in Minnesota and the Dakotas. By joining forces, we can offer a diverse range of bees that are acclimated to various climates, ensuring the success of beekeeping enthusiasts across the region.

The Spring Migration

Each spring, our buzzing journey begins as we embark on the annual migration to procure packages and nucs from our trusted partners. The careful selection and transportation of these bee colonies are a testament to our dedication to providing our customers with the finest bee stock available. Our journey ensures that our bees arrive at their new homes in Minnesota and the Dakotas ready to thrive and contribute to the local ecosystem.

Quality Assurance

At Little Apiary on the Prairie, we take immense pride in the quality of our bees. Our colonies are meticulously maintained to be hygienic, mite-free, and resilient. We understand the challenges that beekeepers face, and our commitment to delivering bees of the highest standard reflects our dedication to supporting the success of our customers.

Hygienic and Mite-Free

Our hygienic breeding practices set us apart. We prioritize the well-being of our bees, employing careful breeding techniques that emphasize hygienic behaviors. This not only enhances the overall health of the colonies but also contributes to the natural resistance against common bee diseases. We believe in fostering a resilient bee population that can thrive in various environments.

Mite infestations can pose a significant threat to bee colonies. Recognizing the importance of mite-free bees, we implement rigorous mite management strategies to ensure that our colonies remain healthy and vibrant. By prioritizing mite resistance in our breeding programs, we empower our customers with bees that can withstand the challenges of modern beekeeping.

Gentle and Productive

Our commitment to responsible beekeeping extends to the temperament and productivity of our bees. We understand the importance of working with bees that are not only gentle but also highly productive. Through selective breeding, we strive to maintain a balance that allows beekeepers to work harmoniously with their colonies while enjoying bountiful harvests of honey and other bee-related products.

Sustainability at the Core

Little Apiary on the Prairie is founded on principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship. We recognize the vital role that bees play in pollination, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring the health of our ecosystems. As caretakers of these remarkable creatures, we are committed to promoting practices that not only benefit our business but also contribute to the well-being of our planet.

What Makes us Different

We aren't a traditional business trying to monetize our hobby. We are a family trying to share our hobby with others and make it more affordable .  When we first started working with bees, we were frustrated by the high costs. We did our research and decided to cut the middle man out and help you get bees more affordably. This is important to understand, because while we do our best, we aren't the right solution for everyone.  We will always stand behind our bees and your money is never at risk with us, but we may not be the right solution for everyone.  We can't guarantee timelines but do our best, and we can't guarantee your bees or queen for the season.  After you take delivery, they are your bees. If a queen doesn't lay within 2 weeks of delivery, we'll do our best to help you out.   At the end of the day, we're just a family that will bring you bees if we can.  If we find that we aren't able to meet your expectations, were happy to give you your money back.

Your Success is Our Success

At Little Apiary on the Prairie, we measure our success by the success of our customers. We take pride in being a part of your beekeeping journey, providing support, guidance, and the highest quality bee stock. As you embark on this adventure, rest assured that you have a dedicated partner in us, committed to fostering a thriving beekeeping community in the Midwest.
