Why August Is the Most Important Month for Northern Beekeepers

The bees that carry a colony through a northern winter are raised from roughly August into early October, and they are physiologically different from summer bees — longer-lived, fat-body heavy, built to hold a cluster together for months. Mite damage to that generation is not visible on a frame, and it is not reversible in October.

That's the whole reason August matters more than any other month here.

Why can't I just treat later?

You can, and it will kill mites. But the Honey Bee Health Coalition's guide is direct about the cost: treating early in the Population Decrease phase is important, and late control when mite numbers are high may be insufficient to protect colonies from the consequences — viruses, weakness, mortality — of high infestation.

It also says that having a low mite population at the start of Population Decrease is critical, because if mite levels are high the colony may not be healthy enough to rear bees that survive dormancy.

In the northern plains, post-harvest Population Decrease arrives in August, not October. A beekeeper waiting for cool weather is applying a southern calendar to a northern problem.

What does the September trap look like?

A colony with heavy boxes, good population, and nothing visibly wrong. It looks like your best hive.

Then the cluster shrinks through December, can't hold heat by late January, and there's a handful of bees on the bottom board in February. The population you saw in September told you almost nothing. The quality of those bees was decided in August.

So what do I actually do this month?

  1. Pull supers if you haven't. Most treatments can't be used with honey supers on.
  2. Wash a sample. 300 bees, brood frame, alcohol wash. A real number, not a guess.
  3. Treat if the count says to — and check your product's temperature range against the ten-day forecast, not just today.
  4. Re-sample after treatment comes off. Results should come back under 2%.

Which treatment works in August up here?

It depends on temperature and brood. From the Coalition's guide: Formic Pro is labeled 50–85°F and works with capped brood present. Apiguard runs 60–105°F but needs supers off. Thymovar is narrower, 60–85°F.

Oxalic acid carries no temperature restriction — only a caution about opening hives below 40°F. Its limit is brood, not heat: it's least effective when capped brood is present, which in August it is. That one surprises people, and it's worth getting right.

Read the label. It's the law and it overrides anything on this page.

And if I lose colonies anyway?

Some winters you will. That's beekeeping on the prairie — the cold is real, the winter is long, and no genetics or treatment makes a colony bulletproof. What good August management buys you is losing two instead of eight.

Go pull a wash count while there's still time to act on it.
